AFTER A DISASTROUS SIXTH GRADE, Jake Herndon is anxiously awaiting his Big Do-Over, starting with his new school's notorious seventh grade sleepover. Awkward team-building games and forced fun quickly become the least of his problems, however, when a dangerous organization invades and the night takes a shocking turn. Jake and two new classmates, Lucy and TJ, barely escape, only to find themselves in a fight for survival on the streets of Chicago. Over the next 48 hours they unravel a mystery dating back to the Civil War and an incredible secret about Jake s family.
Full of unforgettable characters and unexpected twists, The League and the Lantern is a jaw-dropping ride of mind-bending revelations and laugh-out-loud humor. If Jake and his new friends can make it through this weekend, they just might have a shot at seventh grade.
In this debut novel, family television executive producer and dad Brian Wells has created an epic, rip-roaring comedy adventure that s also about courage, family and friendship. The result is an engaging mix of great characters, crackling wit and unexpected twists that 9- to 14-year-olds, entertainment executives and family groups are applauding.
Wells works from the belief that great entertainment is driven by memorable characters and imaginative writing, and it shows. The League and The Lantern delivers all of this and more without objectionable language or inappropriate themes. Throw in a plot that traces back to real historical figures and you ve got what some are calling Percy Jackson meets National Treasure.
As an extra bonus, the book also invisibly weaves in 140 of the top vocabulary words for middle school success. A free downloadable study guide is available on the book's website.

I. Loved. This. Book.C.S. Lewis once said, “A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.” Y’all. THIS? is a good children’s story. It’s a good adult story. It’s just a good story.
In fact, I haven’t been as captivated or entertained by a middle grade novel since the Harry Potter series. Before that it was of course The Chronicles of Narnia. And while I haven’t yet read the Percy Jackson books, what I have heard about them leads me to easily put The League and the Lantern in the same … well, league.
The trio of main characters – Jake, TJ, and Lucy – are a hoot! Strong kids (emotionally, mentally, etc.) from loving families and different backgrounds. All three are misfits of sorts (but then, who isn’t in middle school?) and this bonds them together … even before they’re forced together by the museum break-in and murder and – you know – fleeing for their lives. High stakes, fast-paced action ensues, peppered with hearty doses of humor that is edifying while still appealing to the middle grade mind. (Poor TJ – he just wants something to eat 🙂 ) As if that weren’t fabulous enough, history comes alive, laced with just enough intrigue to have kids digging for more info. Lo and behold, they’re learning before they know what’s hit them!
The League and the Lantern is imaginative and well-written from page 1 to the final sentence. Hilariously smart humor for middle grade kids and their adults, well-written movie quality action scenes, high stakes suspense, historical intrigue…. and bonus education while you’re at it. Brian Wells set out to provide quality entertainment for his kids, and he has more than done so. I am thoroughly impressed with the intentionality behind this book – the values, the excellence, even the vocabulary (he worked with education professionals to seamlessly weave 140 of the top vocab words for middle school success into The League and the Lantern) and engaging history. As a teacher, as an aunt, as an avid reader – I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Completely enjoyed it and waiting eagerly for the next volume in the series. (P.S. – My husband snatched up the book as soon as I’d finished with it – he’s reading it now…. and giggling in the background while I type up this review. I’d say it’s a winner in our household all around! Our childless household. lol.)

The League and the Lantern Brian Wells 9780997227000 Books Reviews
My 10 year old son is dyslexic. We read to him everyday with the hope that it will ignite a passion for reading that will fuel him to overcome the obstacles he faces. He has liked many of the books we've read over the years but this one beat them all. When your child is literally begging you to keep reading you know you've got something good. As a family we had so many wonderful discussions about the characters and their journey. Discussions about friendship and loyalty, about how to treat people, about history. We were so sad when the book ended and are waiting very impatiently for the next one.
Oh my! This book is fantastic! Fans of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson are going to love this one! Trust me, this just could be the next big thing. It’s awesome. It’s geared for middle schoolers (ages 9-12) but even adults will love it.
It begins with a 12-year-old boy named Jake Herndon. He’s the kind of kid who is trying to figure out who he is and where he belongs. He’s a genius when he wants to be. It’s summer and Jake is anxiously awaiting his seventh grade year at a new school for his new do-over. This all began with his seventh grade sleepover with the new school at a museum. Except it goes completely wrong. An organization invades and takes the night into a shocking swirl of events.
He becomes fast friends with TJ McDonald and Lucy Garcia. Before I continue on, let me explain a little bit about this two. I loved these characters so much! Their character development is awesome and add a fun touch to the story. These three friends are also all different races.
TJ is slightly awkward. He loves his pop culture so you can’t go a moment without him referencing a superhero, Star Wars, or The Princess Bride. He’s a genius with semi-hyper memory and does fencing for a sport.
Lucy has just moved to the states from Nepal. She’s traveled all over the world so she knows how to bargain for a cheaper price on something. She’s quite smart too, but she doesn’t trust as easily since she’s traveled so much. She also is fluent in several languages which comes in handy as they’re trying to survive the next 48 hours on the streets of Chicago.
As they are on the run, they discover a mystery that leads them to a secret from the Civil War. This is where it really cool and I don’t want to spoil anything.
Parents and teachers will love this part because kids won’t realize that they’re learning anything as they read this epic story. There are tons of fun facts about the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln included. We even get to visit some of those historic sites! Plus Brian Wells incorporated 140 vocabulary words that kids should know. In fact, be sure to check out the sweet bonus features at [...]
There are also lots of moral lessons throughout the story. These include family, friendship, mercy and compassion.
Disclaimer I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review, which I have given. I was not required to write a positive review and have not been compensated for it in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.
This book was so much fun from the first chapter to the last. I loved it (I am definitely not in the target age group) and so did my 14 year old daughter. My 11 year old son was waiting, not so patiently, to get his hands on it and is enjoying it immensely. The characters are very relatable and you like them....or dislike them...or are annoyed by them right away. What I mean is, you immediately become invested in who these characters are and what their story is. You quickly come to care about them and where this journey will take them. I felt like the dialogue, jokes, and choices that the main characters make were very realistic based on the kids that I'm around (mostly 10-15 year olds). I loved watching the friendships form as the adventure unfolds. The author did a great job of showing that we can find our best friends in the most unexpected ways and circumstances as long as we are open to it and don't let superficial quirks get in our way. He made history so fun and interesting and integrated it expertly through the adventure so that it didn't feel like a school lesson. My favorite part of this book, and I loved many things about it, was the message of compassion and redemption woven throughout the story.
